While threating her for intractible epilepsy, neurosurgeon Dr. Penfiled applied a mild electrical current to stimulate various areas of her brain. While the current was on, Patient MM said: “I hear music… and then it stopped. Penfield placed number on this and other brain locations to map these unexpected sensations (see Figure 1 below).
When Dr. Penfield turned the current back on, Patient MM said "the music is back on." It must be a tape recorder. The music picked up right where it left off. In a different brain location she reported watching her boss scold her for a mistake she'd made. When the current was switched off, the scene paused. Penfield concluded that a permanent recording is being made of our conscious experience, like a video recording.

Fully conscious during this brain surgery, 40 of the 520 patients of Dr. Penfield reported dreams, smells, auditory and visual images, and out-of-body experiences during brain surgery while he was stimulating their brains with a mild electrical current.
